Things to do in St Albans: Roman history, park walks and live entertainment

Explore Verulamium, visit the cathedral and museums, or plan a night at one of St Albans’ theatres.

Make time for Verulamium

Verulamium Park is one of the city’s most useful places for a relaxed outing, combining open parkland, paths and lakes close to the centre. It stands on the site of the Roman city, with surviving historic features adding another layer to a walk.

The council’s park page explains the facilities and current visiting information. Follow signs around the lakes and any works or access changes; a lakeside walk does not mean the water is suitable for swimming.

Choose a museum visit

Verulamium Museum focuses on the Roman settlement and its finds. It offers a useful indoor companion to the park, especially if you want more context for what survives outside. St Albans Museum + Gallery in the former Town Hall has a separate programme of exhibitions and local stories.

These are different venues in different parts of the city. Choose the collection or exhibition that interests you rather than treating them as one building, and check admission and opening information on the museum service’s own pages.

Explore the cathedral and old streets

St Albans Cathedral offers architecture, visitor trails, tours, music and a changing events programme. The neighbouring streets give you several ways to extend a visit, from Holywell Hill to George Street and the shops around Market Place.

The Clock Tower is another distinctive landmark, with seasonal opportunities to climb it. If you are building a day around a tour or climb, check that particular activity rather than assuming the building’s general opening covers it.

See a show or join an activity

The Alban Arena at the Civic Centre hosts touring entertainment, music, comedy and family shows. The Abbey Theatre at Westminster Lodge provides a separate programme, including Company of Ten productions and other performances. Both publish their own calendars and access details.

For something more active, local clubs and the Cottonmill cycling facilities offer different starting points. St Albans Cycle Hub publishes training, rides, track and workshop information; an organised session can have its own booking arrangements.

Look beyond the city centre

The de Havilland Aircraft Museum is at Salisbury Hall in London Colney, outside the central walking circuit. Its aircraft and aviation history make it a different kind of outing, with its own admission and visiting arrangements.

A shorter local plan might combine a market browse with a cafe or pub visit. Use the shopping guide for the city’s retail areas and What’s On for dated events, keeping the year-round ideas here separate from the current monthly selection.
